By default anyone can access all your personal web pages. However, as soon as you set access restrictions for a particular directory (including the default or 'root' directory for your web site), only those with the correct name and password can access web pages within the restricted directory.
For example, you may wish to allow only your family overseas access to certain web pages. All you need to do is create a directory and place your web pages in that directory. Then give your family the name and password for the restricted directory and they can access the web pages.
This name is totally independent of your TelstraClear user-ids and can be changed or removed at anytime. When a person tries to look at a web page in a restricted directory they will be prompted with a name and password dialogue box. They must correctly fill in both before being allowed to access the restricted page.

Adding Access Control
These are the steps required to set up a restricted directory and assign access to it.- Go to the Manage Users page on the TelstraClear website.
- Click on the 'Personal Web Hosting Access Control' link. Enter your username and password. This is your password and you are prompted to enter it here as an additional security measure to make sure only you can change your Access Control options. Click the 'Next' button to continue.
- Near the bottom of the page you will see a series of boxes labelled 'Name 1', 'Password 1' etc.
In the upper box type a name and in the lower box type a password, as in the example below.
Note: Names are not related to user-ids. They are simply "names" used for restricting access to areas of your web site. For example, you may create a 'Name 1' of 'family' to allow your family to access certain web pages and a 'Name 2' of 'friends' to allow your friends to access other web pages.
Repeat this for up to 5 user names and passwords.
Note: It is not necessary to set all the names and passwords at once. You can return to this page at any time to add or delete names.
When you have entered all the required names and passwords, click the 'Next' button. The 'Restrict Access to Directories' page will load.
- On the 'Restrict Access to Directrories' page you will select which directories are restricted and which of the names you have defined will have access to them. There are 5 boxes on this page. Each one represents a directory that you can restrict access to (you can create additional directories to hold your web pages using the FTP software you use to upload your web pages).You will also see the names that you have defined at the bottom of these boxes.
To restrict access to a directory, select the directory from the drop down list at the top of one of the boxes. Do this by clicking on the down arrow at the right hand end of the directory list box. Select the directory from the list. Note: If you have not created any additional directories, only the default directory will appear in the drop down list box. If you restrict access to the default (root) directory, everyone who visits your web page will be prompted to enter a User Name and Password before being able to see any page.
Next, assign the names that can access this directory. Do this by clicking in the check box next to the names you want to have access to the selected directory. A tick mark in the box indicates the name can access the selected directory once the password is entered.
Repeat this for any other directories you wish to restrict, up to the maximum of 5. - Once you have completed all the required boxes, click the 'Save Changes' button. You will be returned to the 'Preferences' page.
Changing Access Control
- Go to the Manage Users page on the TelstraClear website.
- Click on the 'Personal Web Hosting Access Control' link. Enter your password in the Password box. Click the 'Next' button.
- To add a new name and password, type them in an empty 'Name x' and 'Password x' box.
To delete an existing name and password, click once inside the name box of the one you wish to delete and then delete all the characters. Do the same for the password box.
To change an existing name, click once inside the name box of the one you want to change and then type the new name. Do the same for the password box.
Once you have made all your required changes on this page, click the 'Next' button. The 'Restrict Access to Directories' page will load.
- The directories you have already restricted will show on this page, along with the names that can access them (indicated by a tick next to the name).
To add a restriction to a directory, find an unused 'Allow access to this directory' box. This will be one that has no names ticked and the directory currently showing in the drop down list box will be '/'.
Select the directory you want to restrict access to by clicking the down arrow and then choose the directory from the list. Click on the check box next to each name that you want to have access to this directory.
To change which names have access to a certain directory, click in the check box next to the name. A tick in the box indicates that the name has access to the directory, no tick indicates that name does not have access to the directory.
To delete a restricted directory, that is, change it so anyone can access it without a name and password, find the 'Allow access to this directory' box that contains the directory you want to unrestrict. Uncheck all the names underneath it, so none of the check boxes have ticks in them.
Once you have made all the changes you require, click on the 'Save Changes' button. You will be returned to the 'Preferences' page.
